Uncle Bobbies Coffee & Books

This month, a new bookshop and coffee shop opened up in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Among the many reasons to check out Uncle Bobbie’s is its impressive book selection, the quality of its coffee, and the social scene it’s setting off.

The shop has a surprisingly small staff, at less than sixty employees. It will be open seven days a week from 7:00am until 9:00pm. In addition to its book selection, the store offers a variety of food options, from coffee and hot chocolate to soups and desserts from local Black vendors. They even offer free author readings. There’s also a movie screening room and a youth poetry slam. Located at 5445 Germantown Ave., this is one of the few Black-owned bookstores in the city, and it will be a welcome addition.

The best part about Uncle Bobbie’s is its mission. It is a nod to the social scene that has been rekindling the glory days of Germantown. And while it is the smallest of its kind, it is also the most important. Through its social programs, Uncle Bobbies seeks to provide the disadvantaged with the opportunity to explore the world through a diverse array of literary works. The establishment has been named a “salute” to Hill’s father, a noted author and social commentator. During the past three decades, Hill’s father has served as an inspiration, an ally, and a champion.

Harpoon Brewery
